| In 1989 during a one-day, 175 mile ride that the idea for Clif BarŪ was born. "After miles of riding and a number of PowerBarsŪ, I wanted a bar that tasted good," said Gary Erickson. With a recipe of his mother's as a starting point, Gary and Lisa Thomas worked to create a tasty, healthier alternative. Hundreds of trial batches and dozens of bike rides later, the Clif BarŪ was born. The company was named Clif Bar Inc. in 1996, and is privately held. The business has grown beyond their wildest expectations. In 1997 and 1998 Clif Bar Inc. was included in Inc. Magazine's 500 Fastest Growing Companies in America and Working Woman's top 500 Women-Owned businesses. From the very beginning, Gary and Lisa have placed a strong emphasis on interacting with customers and listening and responding to their needs. The SHOT redesign, kosher certification, and the change from dairy-based chips to soy-based in the Clif BarŪ Cookies 'n Cream and Carrot Cake flavors are all a direct result of customer input. |
